Maybe you have to set the rights for your USB device?
(Silly but it helped me.)

I'm having trouble syncing my Kyocera 7135 PalmOS Smartphone. I tried
chmod 777 /dev/ttyUSB1
ln -s /dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/pilot
but I still can't get gnome-pilot to communicate with it when I choose
Tools->Pilot Settings in Evolution and hit HotSync on the phone.
I also tried the same thing with
/dev/ttyUSB0
/dev/usb/ttyUSB0
/dev/usb/ttyUSB1
I even tried plugging it into the serial port doing the same thing with
/dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttyS1.
I also tried rebooting the computer with the phone plugged in, in case
the trouble was with hotplug.
I have no trouble mounting and syncing my Fuji camera on the same USB
port, so I know my USB modules are set up.
What else is there to try?
