Looks like a nice idea to me.

[Timo, can you forward this to the Evolution devs is you can't respond for
it?]
Hi,
I'm wondering if you can take a look at the algorithm specified in the
referenced I-D and give your comments as to its viability for use in your
messaging client.
Specifically, the I-D defines mechanisms for using SRV resource records
which have been mapped to the domain element of email addresses as a way
to discover the submission servers associated with those mail domains, on
the assumption that the presence of an email address implies that the user
has accounts in those domains, and is therefore authorized to use the
submission servers associated with those mail domains. I'm developing a
sister spec which will use the same basic alogirithm to look for the IMAP
servers and then the POP servers (in that order) associated with the
user's known mail domains, but want to get the algorithm right first.
When the two specs are used together, they will [hopefully] allow a mail
client to autoconfigure the submission and retrieval servers using simple
DNS lookups, based on a known email address as the only input. This
approach should be useful for home/ISP users, and also for mobile users
who use different servers depending on where they are and their view of
the zone data associated with a mail domain at any given time. This
approach also provides recovery mechanisms when a static preconfigured
server becomes unavailable for some reason.
Any comments would be appreciated. You can either reply back to us or send
your comments to the ietf-submit imc org mailing list.
Thanks

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
Title : Message-Submission SRV Resource Record
Author(s) : E. Hall, J. Klensin
Filename : draft-hall-submit-srv-00.txt
Pages : 11
Date : 2003-6-18
This document specifies the use of SRV resource records for
locating the message-submission servers associated with a known
mail domain.
A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-hall-submit-srv-00.txt
To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
"get draft-hall-submit-srv-00.txt".
A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt
Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.
Send a message to:
mailserv ietf org
In the body type:
"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-hall-submit-srv-00.txt".
NOTE: The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
how to manipulate these messages.
Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.
