Maybe you are suffering from this bug:
http://support.ximian.com/q?438
If this is the bug, the solution is to remove *all* comments, empty
lines and probably all unnecessary white space from your /etc/hosts
file.
FYI: This comes up regularly the last weeks. It's a glibc bug, that
seems to be triggered only by a few apps. Unfortunately Evo is one of
them, so remember this if you get strange errors sending mails. Fixes
are done, IIRC -- now new glibc has to be propagated through the various
distros... ;)

char
*t="\10pse\0r\0dtu\0 ghno\x4e\xc8\x79\xf4\xab\x51\x8a\x10\xf4\xf4\xc4";
main(){ char h,m=h=*t++,*x=t+2*h,c,i,l=*x,s=0; for (i=0;i<l;i++){ i%8?
c<<=1:
(c=*++x); c&128 && (s+=h); if (!(h>>=1)||!t[s+h]){ putchar(t[s]);h=m;s=0;
}}}
Sure enough! That fixed it! Thanks, everyone! What a weird, weird problem.
I never would have figured that one out.
