there's a way to turn it back on in the configuration, but you need to
add it manually "/Mail/Display/thread_subject" = 1

how and where do we do this manually?

Hi all,

When using threaded view on mailinglists too which hotmail-users are
subscribed too, their messages don't show up in the original thread, but
they start a new one. This is because hotmail doesn't include the
References-header I presume. Nothing to be changed about that, but is
there a way to put the mail into the thread anyway? That way at least my
archive has some consistency...

Welcome to the mailing list hell caused by MS. It is not just Hotmail
but all MS mail clients that I am aware of, that cause this
non-threading problem. Complain to the users of these clients and to
MS. :-)
