Sounds like a Mozilla configuration issue (or a gnome-url configuration issue?). Unfortunately I know nothing about mozilla commandline options so I can't help ya.
I've seen this question before; it's a mozilla FAQ, I think. You're right; there's an option to be used somewhere on the command line to stop this.
