Thanks for the link. I checked and I have the following all installed
and spell checking is enabled. It still is greyed out.

gnome-spell     0.4-ximian.2
aspell          0.33.7.1-ximian.2
aspell-en       0.33.7.1-3mdk
aspell-en-ca    0.33.7.1-ximian.2
aspell-en-gb    0.33.7.1-ximian.2
libpspell4      0.12.2-2.1mdk

I also noticed that  pspell 0.12.2-ximian.3 is installed.

Could the problem be related to having both pspell and libpspell
installed,or because some files are mdk and others ximian?
