In the case of personal correspondence, I agree with you and indeed that is 
exactly what I do.

Correspondence on a list such as this is different.  Most people reading a 
message will have just finished reading its antecedent and will already know 
to what it is replying.  When combing through dozens or hundreds of messages 
most of us will want to see the "meat" of the message first in order to make 
a quick decision whether to scroll down for the rest of it, or go to the next 
message.

That can only be done if the reply is at the top.  If the reply is at the end, 
one must scroll down through every message before deciding whether to read it 
or discard it.  On a busy list, that quickly becomes a PITA.
