[Evolution] Acceptable UI speed?

What's a good measure of Evolution's UI responsiveness? A friend of mine
just started using it and mentioned that the Compose window is slow in
coming to the screen (on new messages or replies). I've attributed some
of my own experience with that to having 10+ programs/windows open at
all times. My avg window response is usually under a sec, sometimes
closer to 2 sec. Is this normal? PIII/600 notebook 512MB RAM, SuSE 7.3
Pro. My initial thought was that it's a GTK issue, not Evo's fault. Any
ideas?
