The code for loading images in the 1.0.x series never changed throughout
it's lifespan. I suspect that you are just getting unlucky and gnome-vfs
is making CORBA calls to gconf from another thread which cause crashes
(this is a known bug - in development cvs we have dropped gnome-vfs for
loading images over http and instead use libsoup now).
