For a start, evolution via imap doesn't parse it's own mbox files in the
evolution/local/mailfolder directory structure on a server where I also
use evolution locally. From evolution, each mbox only has 1 mail
message in it, which is the whole mbox file containing multiple
messages.

Evolution doesn't parse the mbox files through an IMAP connection - the
IMAP server does that. So if it's messed up, then blame your IMAP
daemon.

What would be ideal is if evolution via imap would recognize or just be
told with a config option that the user mail folders on the imap server
were in evolution format. The fact that there are mbox files in folders
could be hidden, contacts could potentially be shared, etc. etc.

oh, so you are seeing:

+ Inbox
|- mbox
|-+subfolders
| |-+Another Folder
| |- mbox
+ Outbox
|- mbox

Is that what you are seeing? Evolution is displaying that correctly.
That's the way it *should* look - at least under wu.imapd.
