[Evolution] Evolution addressbook showing blank after snapshot upgrade

I recently upgraded Evo snapshots via the Ximian updater (after working
through some problems with the libgal module, during which I uninstalled
/ reinstalled Evo a couple of times). 

I now find that although the addressbook files are still there, no data
shows in Evo.
I had made a backup of the whole ~/evolution directory, so I tried
renaming the current live evolution/local/Contacts directory & copying
the backup Contacts directory in there.   No difference.

What's gone wrong??
