[Evolution] Sharing mail

It seems unlike Netscape Messenger, it's hard to get Evolution to share
mail with other applications without using IMAP. Does anyone know whether
it's possible to do password-less login using IMAP? In SSH it's possible
to set up keys so that you can log in directly without a password. It
seems silly to have to use IMAP when the mail folders are local!
