After having the same problem (kernel 2.4.2 is slow, but oaf-slay
doesn't work) I thought I was loosing my mind too.
But I'm feeling much better now.
I'm running debian unstable, updated last night. It seems
/etc/oaf/oaf-config.xml was misconfigured (essentially blank). I
changed it to:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<oafconfig>
<searchpath>
<item>/usr/share/oaf</item>
</searchpath>
</oafconfig>
And now Evo starts up just fine.

Craig

Thank you. I knew I wasn't loosing my mind:-) This doesn't seem to be
caused from any other processes That I know of. It is good to note that
it doesn't run slow right away. I only notice it after I logout and
login a few times, It seems only after oaf has been running for a
while.

I am running a 2.4.0 kernel and have installed gnome1.4 beta. Immediately
following the installation of 1.4 I also noticed that evolution took an
age to start up, as did a composer window. After following this thread for
a few days I did an oaf-slay. Bingo, the speed problem was fixed.
