Are you sure they're ok? Looks like you have a busted automake
installation.

Right, I have reinstalled automake, autoconf, libtool, gettext and
libunicode (from Helix) but now I get this:

  checking for libunicode... configure: error: libunicode not found

Make sure you 'rm config.cache' before autogen.sh'ing again.

But:

  [ross lancelot evolution]$ rpm -qa | grep unicode
  libunicode-0.4.gnome-0_helix_1

Eh?  I cannot find the -devel package anywhere - Do I need to install
this from source?

It should be in that package.  try gnome-config --libs unicode.

PS: is the GNOME cvs tree the correct tree to use for Evo?

Yes.  Evolution is developed in public in the GNOME cvs tree.
