I agree that you should not have . in your path, but this might be a better
solution:

instead of using ~/evolution, why not ~/.evolution? or, better yet - why
not let the user specify where to put it? It could default to ~/Evolution
or whatever

bah, what do I know? actually, perhaps ~/.evolution isn't a good idea
either

Something I just noticed after evolution crashed...

Bug-buddy will try to get the stack trace from ~/evolution instead
of /gnome/bin/evolution, so you get a junk stack trace.

May I suggest ~/Evolution ?
