I like this method #3...if one were to read it later..you could have an
additional flag.  Set the flag and unset the flag once read manually.  So every
message you've opened up will be marked read. If replied to marked replied to.
The end user can flag it to mean whatever they want....i.e. read message at a
later time.

Is evolution going to have incoming messages marked "new" or "recent"?  New I
mean it parses the mbox for any unread messages.  Recent means any new messages
since the mailbox was opened last.
