[Evolution] AUTH and SMTP/ESMTP

I found the reason that digitalme.com appears to not support AUTH to evolution. 
It seems that though the rfc requires you to send ESMTP if you are going to do
auth etc, many servers, digitalme.com included, do not do this.

Secondly, has anyone been able to add contacts with ANY version of evolution? 
It always crashes on me up to today's CVS version.
