allow me to illustrate;
i receive about 300 messages a day of which maybe 10% will have 500kb+ pdf files attached to them
at home i'm on a 28kbs line
if evolution insists on downloading the entirety of every message i will be forced with great sadness to look
elsewhere for an email client. It's just not an option for me.
people like me may be a small part of your prospective user group.
but do you really want to lose all of us?

"Why is my message truncated!?! Bug in Evolution!!!"
this wouldn't be a good thing :)

surely a truncation feature is sufficient??
i run at home on a 28kbps line...
i use netscape mail at the moment (waiting for another linux client with
truncation)
setting it to truncate any message over 10kb i get all my mail quickly
down my slow conenction and can choose to get the ones with large
attachments at my leisure.
10kb is still quite a lot of plain text (which is still what the majority
of mail is)

Actually, it would be better if the servers themselves recognized
a common compression protocol for attachments, and would pack them all
together in one shot, bring down mail, then send you the equivalent of
a
'package' (like rpm/deb) for your attachments. When that 'package'
reaches
your system, the attachments are 'unpacked' and linked to the right
messages.
That sounds a nightmare to implement.
