I had libxml 1.8.9 installed.  I reverted back to 1.8.7 (the only way I
found to do this was to get the 1.8.7 rpms and install them with a
--nodeps and a --force flag.)  "rpm -a -q | grep libxml" now claims that
1.8.7 is installed, but I still get the same errors, again failing to
link with the -lasound flag. (see previous messages in thread for more
detail.) So really, I still don't have much of an idea of what is going
on.   :>
