Thinking about this, I realized that all of the other packages installed into /usr, and evolution installed
into /usr/local. So I did a 'make uninstall' and then reinstalled with 'make install PREFIX=/usr' . I no
longer receive the camel error, but I still get the OAF error:
evolution-shell-WARNING **: Could not activate component
OAFIID:evolution-shell-component:evolution-mail:d3cb3ed6-a654-4337-8aa0-f443751d6d1b. (Maybe you need to set
OAF_INFO_PATH?)
Any other ideas? OAF seemed to compile and install correctly.

That means that at run time the mailer can't find the shared libraries
in the directory that it thinks you installed into (and thus won't
run, thus causing the shell error you also quoted, which is suggesting
that maybe you have an oaf problem, but it's wrong). Did you do
something weird with changing prefixes between configure time and
install time?
