The nearest thing to filtered view i have seen is Opera's M2 mail
client. Unfortunately, it has poor integration with desktop :(
Do you think the iTunes/GMail GUI would work for Evolution users?
Have you tried out using vertical view in evolution ?
View->Preview->Vertical view
