I would suggest adding a new function, and then change callers carefully
one by one in places where you can be sure it doesn't have any ill
effects. (I would assume the behaviour can't be changed in places where
it would affect the names of files and directories kept on disk between
evolution sessions, and that it can be changed in places where it
affects file names used only ephemerally.)
