They are not. As you can see in the wiki
(http://go-evolution.org/Evo2.4), there is a whole section on
performance, which is one of the objectives of 2.3/2.4

So, I guess, Lee, that if you send an updated patch which fixes the
speed issue without removing an already existing feature, the mailer
people will probably accept it.
