One feedback technique that might be useful here is to start the
operation silently, and if it ends up taking more than a couple of
seconds, pop up a progress dialog at that point. File managers
(including nautilus IIRC) often do this when copying/moving files, as
it's impossible to tell in advance how long it might take.
