In the pop case - they will have the same uid, if the server supports it.

Otherwise, you can compare the content (e.g. using checksums), ignoring stuff like "Received" headers which will change.  Of course as soon as you send a message through most mailing lists it will add footers and other crap which make the comparision task more difficult.

Also, the Message-ID: header is supposed to be unique, but relying on that opens you up to message-denial type attacks, if the software is known to relyon that for uniqueness.

How can a computer determine if an email message is duplicitous?  Surely
