Personally I think it would look better if all the buttons were the same
width, and you just left a gap rather than extending a button over two
or more columns... wide buttons have a habit of not looking like buttons
and therefore being overlooked by the user, and IIRC the HIG makes a
point of advising against them.
White space is your friend, you don't have to fill every pixel with a
control :)
