This is simply not a bug, there is little point discussing it. Sending an * makes it perfectly legible in the text version, which is all that is required.

Thank you, Not
I have read your comment to #47549.
If a mail is sent in the format of html, nothing special happens.
If a mail is sent in the plain-text format, this bug appears.
And the mail will be sent in the plain-text format by default, unless we
use the Format -> HTML menu.
If we sent the mail in the plain-text format, it's no wonder that the
bullet will appear as asterish, because:
1. in the plain-text html, we can only use the charater whose ascii code
is under 128.
2. and the bullet character's ascii code is 146 (or something else,
sorry, but it is greater than 128)
3. so we use an asterish character standing for the bullet (the asterish
looks like a bullet and its ascii code is less than 128)
Thus, if we want to keep the simplex of plain-text, we could only
transfer an asterish character standing for the bullet.
So in the sender's composer, he see a bullet figure; and in the
receiver's explorer, he see a asterish text.
What I want to say is:
I suggest that we draw an asterish but not a bullet in the composer
while the mail in the plain-text format.
Of couse, if the mail is in the html format, we still should draw an
bullet in the composer.
Thus we get the both sides' viewing corresponding whatever the mail's
format is.
Have I expressed myself clear enough?
