hm, what do you think needs to be there for this?  is the stuff on my
branch workable?

I'm guessing you'll want some (mostly atomic, at least from the
perspective of the mailer) api for adding a contact if it doesn't
already exist.  There's some hackish stuff for that in
addressbook/gui/merging/e-card-merging, which I'm still deciding what to
do with.
