IIRC, in other UIs, in GNOME (GDM theme chooser, for instance) dont
behave like that. If you select the label, it doesn't check/uncheck the
checkbox. It does only that when you click on the check box.

So, if I'm not wrong and this is the "GNOME way", doing it in a
different way might not be a good idea.
