OK; it means screwing around with the strings ourselves rather than
letting the shell do it, but I'm happy enough to do that.

Er, what's the difference between 'hiding completely' and 'without'?
If we add a combobox for entering the command, and make it completely
invisible rather than just greying it out when it's not relevant -- is
that OK?
