Hi, it's a pity. yes. The reality being we don't have any developer interested in spending the time to do the support until yest. There are two possibilities in case someone would want to work on it:
1) there is a new thing called Gnome Books (done by a SoC intern), based on Gnome-Documents that can reads epubs. eventually this could be converted into a new Widget to read Epubs, and eventually could be integrated with evince, but this is not trivial amount of work, as most of gnome books is done in _javascript_ I believe.
2) Mate desktop has Atril, which started as a fork of Evince 2.32. In a SoC project for Mate, epub support was added to Atril (i believe this is still not merged into master repository of atril). Since the libview, libdocument and backend parts of atril are mostly the same as in Evince, these patches could be eventually reworked so they can be added to evince (the main difference is that atril supports gtk2 and gtk3, so someone would need to remove all the gtk-version checks from the patches before submitting them for inclusion in evince).
Greetings
José
