[evince] ev_view_zoom_in() gives assertion `view->sizing_mode == EV_SIZING_FREE' failed

GNU/Denemo built with evince-view-2.30 zooms correctly when using
Control with the mouse wheel, but calling ev_view_zoom_in() gives
assertion `view->sizing_mode == EV_SIZING_FREE' failed
The documentation (it says for Evince version 3.8.0) does not provide
any clue as to how to set this. Nor indeed what exactly
ev_view_zoom_in() would do...
Any suggestions as to how to let laptop users zoom the evince view
widget?
