It is supposed pages cache was set dynamic in order to allow more zoom level. Maybe it was set to 400%, but you can't zoom till 400% in practice without having memory problems

I don't really understand why evince 2.30 for windows is faster, AFAIK it is based on poppler/cairo. Am I right, Hib ? Any idea ?
