Well, it depends on your linux distribution which backends are built.
Distributions as ubuntu compile it in.

What distributions are you using?

Hi Bill,
If you are compiling from source, when you run the ./configure script, use the following:

./configure --enable-dvi. Then go through the usual motions of make and make install.

This also works for allowing TIFF format, or PDF format by using:
./configure --enable-pdf --enable-tiff.
For the latter two you need to make sure you have the latest poppler 0.6 and the tiff-dev libraries.
