Something that can

Smart bookmarks are a useful feature, but as implemented they are
extremely confusing and non-discoverable. I don't think they should be
handled by the bookmarks system at all, but rather by the search
engine
preferences. Currently we have a stupid little combo that lets you
select Google/Bing/DuckDuckGo; we should add the ability to configure
arbitrary search engines there, which would be available in the
location entry dropdown just as smart bookmarks currently are. It
would
be basically the same thing, but in a new home.
That would be a good project to work on if you finish the rest early.
Seconded! I have and frequently use ~10 smart bookmarks.
Supporting OpenSearch description files linked using <link
type="search"> would be one way of allowing the user to easily add
additional search engines. See: <http://www.opensearch.org/>,
