There's a gconk key to get the results to display in a new tab.
/apps/epiphany/extensions/smart-bookmarks/dictionarysearch/open_in_tab
It is a boolean. The following command line should help:
> gconftool-2 --set /apps/epiphany/extensions/smart-bookmarks/dictionarysearch/open_in_tab --type bool TRUE
