I'll bet that you enabled Editable menu accelerators in the GNOME 
control center, and accidentally pressed 'x' once when the File > New 
window menu item was selected. Please go to the File menu and see what 
accelerator key is bound to it. If it is 'x', highlight the New window 
menu item and press Ctrl+N. Everything will be back to normal.
