I think Adam was referring to which Linux distribution you were using. 
:-)

The screenshot you showed look to me like a case of improper font 
"hinting". You may try to update the version of libfreetype you are 
using, preferably with the bytecode interpreter enabled. It might also 
help to play a little with the GNOME font settings panel.
