dilemma

Could someone please explain why images opened with Eye of Gnome
frequently appear to be sharper and the colours more bright than the
same images opened in GIMP. I am using Ubuntu 7.10, GIMP 2.4.2 and Eye
of Gnome 2.20.1. I have tried many permutations and combinations of
settings in GIMP all to no avail.
