scroll wheel in eog2

I just asked the following question on another list (before I found this
list), but I got no response.  I'm not sure if this was a user interface
decision or just eog2 in an intermediate state.  I'll ask again here...

What happened to the scroll wheel function in eog2?  Previously the
scroll wheel would zoom in and out of a photo, but now it acts like the
normal vertical scroll bar.  With the hand cursor, this is redundant. 

Is this intentional?  This new operation may be more consistant, but it
is much less usable when using eog to inspect digital photographs.  Is
there any chance the old behaviour could be an option?  I know there is
an emphasis to remove options, but this one was very useful.
