Hi Claus,
2009/6/26 Claus Schwarm <clschwarm googlemail com>:
Short status report: I think, I imported most of the available
information from old drafts and www.gnome.org (wgo) by now. Now we'd
need to fill the gaps and fix wrong or misleading pieces. We may also
need to decide about a few issues.
Overall, I'm still not happy about the content structure. The 'About'
pages most likely to be read by people new to GNOME but they are boring
and lame. For example, 'Why GNOME' is better as a beginning for newbies,
in my opinion. Note that it repeats much of the information in 'About
GNOME'. I still believe, we should make 'About GNOME' the basic sales
pitch and drop the whole 'Products' section. However, that's just a side
note.
My impression is that if we stuff all information about desktop and
platform in the about section, we will end up having too much
information in one place. The Products section idea feels more
scalable as we'll be able to have more specific content about Desktop
and Platform.
Maybe the About section could have some sort of product teasers
pointing to more detailed info in the respective product pages?
In terms of scope, I'd like us to keep very focused on the Front page,
About, and Contact sections for this milestone. In case my suggestion
makes sense for you and others, we'll be able to not get into the
details on how to present Desktop and Platform for now. If we end up
deciding that the About section should have all info about Desktop and
Platform, we'll have to split it in a way that we do the basic bits in
this milestone and a second part on the next. My point is to not
concentrate too much content work in only one milestone.
What needs to be done:
1.) Missing First Drafts:
* "Front page" (not in the wiki yet)
* "Products"
* "Products > Submit Your Product"
* "Contact > Foundation"
I'm not really sure why we would need the last one. It's on the
foundation site, anyway. However. Who's going to write one of them?
In the long term, I think the Foundation website should be moved
inside the GNOME website. For now, we might want to just have a teaser
page with a brief description of the Foundation and a link to the
Foundation website.
I also skip importing the 'friends of gnome' pages.
2.) Missing paragraphs
These are 'flagged' with //TODO. Who's willing to pick one page and fix
them?
3.) URL structure
Right now, urls are sorted by the content. Thus, we
have /community/friends/, for example, instead of /friends/. We still
have time to change that, I believe. We will need redirects, anyway, but
we may want to keep them as simple as possible.
Someone needs to talk to webhackers and figure out what's the best
option here.
The current proposal for the urls looks pretty good to me.
3.) Content review
Please read the pages. If you think, something important is missing,
add //TODO and describe what you think should be changed. Or better yet:
Simply write it.
That's it, I think.
Note that according to the GNOME web schedule, the sections 'About' and
'Contact' are expected to be finished July 15th. That's just two weeks
and we still need to proof-read.
Don't forget the Front page! We need some text for it too. :-)
Thanks for the heads up!
