David Neary handled the GIMP Splash Screen Contest. It was originally
on live.gnome.org, but I think there where problems with that,
especially when it got slashdotted! I've CC'd David so he can let us
know how it was handled.

I'm here ;)

The scripts for the GIMP contest were written by yosh (Manish
Singh) and Helvetix.

Organising the splash contest would be fairly simple. Announce
it, point to a place for entries, decide on judges, and away you
go. The only prerequisites are a closing date and a decision
process. Oh - and make sure to specify a licence for all entries
(all entries must be released under CC-share and share alike,
etc, etc) and a bare minimum of rules (no plagiarism, for
example).

One piece of advice - have no more than 2 or 3 judges. We had 5,
and it was too many, I think. Or perhaps they weren't very well
chosen... Either way, we ended up with a choice which didn't have
universal community acceptance, which is important.

You could say that the release team will choose the logo, and
have one person make a more or less arbitrary decision...

Cheers,
Dave.

Since it seems unlikely we'll be able to use the CGI scripts, I've created a stub on the wiki for a contest.

http://live.gnome.org/GnomeArt_2fSplashScreenContest

If people could add anything that I've missed off, then I can announce it on art.gnome.org when it's ready.
