That's impossible, isn't it? You never know who asks and you 
usally change your answer according to the persons knowledge 
about computers and FOSS.

Thus, using the given slogan, a set of similar answers might do it:

"GNOME - computing made easy"

The web-surfer-hit-the-about-link test:
"GNOME makes computing easy by providing a flexible
        combination of desktop suite and development platform 
        to organize your data, surf the web, draw a picture, 
        or develop applications."

The Non-technical and technical journalists test:
"GNOME makes computing easy by providing a widely-used 
        and flexible combination of desktop suite and development
        platform for Unix and Linux since 1998(?)."

[Note: Non-technical journalists get stuff from all sorts of 
people and need some sign of credability, thus the hint about
the beginning of GNOME and its wide use.]

The parent test (and random-business-people test):
"GNOME makes computing easy by providing a flexible
        combination of graphical tools to organize your data,
        surf the web, draw a picture, or write a letter."

The children (and 'nearly-anyone' or 'non-english-talking') test:
"GNOME makes computing easy by providing graphical 
        tools to draw a picture or write a letter."

That supports the basic slogan, is fairly consitent, and 
please note that some media have space to write more (the
web site and the press releases, for example).
