Presence information: you don't want to connect to everyone you
_could_ call just to see if they're available. A single connection
to a server can handle that for you.
Addressing: it's easier to remember joe example com than it is
to remember joes IP and port. Especially considering the fact that
both IP and port may be dynamically configured on joes network,
and further that joe may move between the networks.
SIP: Session Initiation Protocol. It's meant to _initiate_ the session.
Most other protocols used for VoIP work the same way, because
it's the right way.
