Since writing my previous request for help, I looked once again at the
Preferences in Ekiga. This time, Ekiga recognized my camera and the
video codec had changed from V4L to V4L2.
However the video still did not work and the error message, "...Could
not open the chosen channel..." persisted. So I looked at the
properties and saw that the channel being used was channel 1. So I
changed it to channel 0, and my local video came on!!
However, when I tried to make a call, the video disappeared, the error
message returned, and I could not get even local video on any (0-3)
channel that I tried.
So I'm almost back to square 1 (or 0, if you are binary-inclined).
Here is the output of "ekiga -d 4". It's longer this time...
george Omega:~$ ekiga -d 4

This time also I get an error message that says:
"Error while opening video device UVC Camera (046d:0990)
A moving log will be transmitted during calls. Notice that you can
always transmit a given image or the moving logo by choosing "Picture"
as video plugin and "MovingLogo" or "StaticPicture" as device.
Your driver doesn't seem to support any of the color formats supported
by Ekiga. Please check your kernel driver documentation in order to
determine which Palette is supported."
Any suggestions? TIA.
