This failed assertion comes from
http://sources.debian.net/src/gtk%2B3.0/3.8.2-3/gtk/gtkfilechooserbutton.c,
line 1647.
I looked at current gtk code
(https://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/tree/gtk/gtkfilechooserbutton.c), and
it seems it is still there.
Is this a gtk bug or not?
