Re: [Ekiga-devel-list] GNOME Roadmap - Information Request sfor ekiga

Damien Sandras a it :
If we have enough manpower to achieve it, ekiga 3.00 should be ready.
The main feature of Ekiga 3.00 will be :
- support for audio and video codecs on the form of plugins (allowing
H.263, H.264 to be used through appropriate plugins)
- a new user interface, more modern, and sexier
- SIP Presence support (to know if somebody is away, in a call, and so
on)

Read this twice : we have SIP already, the new feature is just presence.

- Xvideo support (finally)
- A better Win32 version thans to DirectX support (sound, video,
display)
- IAX2 support
- And much much more

If gstreamer developers help, we could also have plugins to use gstreamer for audio&video devices and codecs. I have already invested some time on it, improving a few things, proposing a few others, but I'm currently stuck.

- Do you have any goals from 2.18 that were not achieved? Why?

3.00 because of the lack of spare time for the main developers. We are
not all financed by big corporations...

- Is there something that is really missing in our infrastructure or
 platform that would help you?

Yes, gstreamer lacks support for applications which are not 100% based on it ; precisely one of the things which block me : http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=413418

- Do you have plans to work on other modules not maintained by you?
 What are they?

No plan (no time).

Gstreamer got some love already. Bug reports with or without patches.

- Do you have any GNOME-wide goals suggestions for the next releases?

More integration. There is no point in doing a desktop if there is no
integration, and currently, integration with Ekiga is rather weak.

Apart from the fact that we got E_CONTACT_VIDEO_URL, in evolution-data-server (which doesn't explicitly show it's also for voice only!), there is none to my knowledge.

Do gnomers even *know* there is already good VoIP in gnome!? Ekiga can do H.323 and SIP already, both audio and video ; it has avahi support so in gatherings people just have to open the addressbook to find and have a go! [this currently means clicking on an update button -- this requirement will go away in 3.0 : little things which change an experience).

Thanks for your interest,

Snark
