is there a way to use Amazon's Database instead of Freedb?
Amazon has a way larger repository. It would be nice to be able to use that.
There are some disadvantages to switching away from FreeDB to
Amazon.com. I'd be surprised to learn that Amazon.com has a database
which is accessible by the same protocol as FreeDB's database. This
means you'd have to find a way to extract the data from Amazon.com's
database of CDs (assuming that is publicly accessible).
More importantly, I doubt that Amazon.com will let you copy, modify, or
share their database like FreeDB will. So there are significant
disadvantages to switching away from FreeDB. I think we're better off
improving and mirroring FreeDB.
It wouldn't be too hard to get CD cover images from Amazon.com via their
URI scheme (which has been reverse-engineered and published by others)
and then store the cover art in an Ogg tag. Also, I think FLAC supports
cover art now too.
