to answer my own question:

replaygain in mp3 is hell ;)

some progs write id3v2.4 RVA2 tags,
some APE2 tags... :(

foobar2000 with wine works fine (for tagging), writes APE tags or what

normalize (http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~cvaill/normalize) writes ID3v2.4
RVA2 tag(imho with an incorrect value btw ( i mean, both mp3lame and
vorbisgain want the same value, and normalize wants a different one).
normalize can also be run with --id3-compat, when he writes a XRVA
frame, which is allowed in id3v2.3 (because if a tag begins with X, then
it's experimental, at least this is what normalize's author says). if i
use this XRVA tag, then easytag works fine (the XRVA tag even survives
the easytag editing). problem is that nothing except a xmms plugin is
able to read this XRV tag. but what is interesting, if i rename this
XRVA tag to RVA2, then i can use it with easytag and also with music
players. no idea what's going on ;)

mp3gain ...is a dangerous piece, because with some switches he adds an
APE2 tag, and with some switches he simple rewrites the mp3 to a new
loudness ;).

summary: normalize is the only one who writes id3 tags, but
unfortunately easytag (id3lib) -unusable ones (and also wrong ones ;)

p.s: did you consider libid3tag? it's a part of the MAD library... and i
don't know it's other qualities, but it can read the RVA2 frame. of
course i understand that it's not that simple to switch the id3 backend.

bye,
gabor
