faliure while searching for devices

Hello - 

I can't seem to get off the ground with dvb daemon.  I am running
0.1.13-1 on arch linux.  I can confirm the card is working with mplayer
dvb://channelnames.  

gnome-dvb-setup never gets past "searching for devices".  A controlling
terminal looks like so:

I am able to tie up the card with another app, start gnome-dvb-setup,
and get as far as an "an error occured while retrieving devices - make
sure other applications don't access DVB devices" dialog.  

I'm not sure what other information might be useful - if anyone can
offer any advice at all I would greatly appreciate it!
